Flippy has no walking animation to rescue a poorly aimed approach: movement comes from rotation and vibration jumps. The essential Flipping is Hard controls are WASD for camera-relative rotation, Space for jumping, and Tab for the phone interface. Understanding how direction changes the jump is the first step toward making deliberate moves instead of accidental launches.

Keyboard controls at a glance

These inputs come from the developer's official Flipping is Hard control guide.

InputResultUseful distinction
W, A, S, DRotate Flippy relative to the cameraThe camera sets the reference direction, not the phone's facing
Space, with no direction heldHigh jumpUsed for height
A direction held with SpaceLong jumpUsed for distance

The official world FAQ also confirms keyboard-and-mouse support and full controller support, including PlayStation DualShock and DualSense controllers. It does not supply a controller button-by-button chart in the registered material. This guide therefore gives the documented keyboard inputs rather than guessing a gamepad layout.

Why the camera changes your movement

Flippy's rotation is camera-relative. Looking at the same piece of terrain from another angle changes the frame of reference for WASD. His visible orientation alone does not tell you which way the next rotation input will move him.

If you repeatedly rotate away from an intended landing, try this diagnostic exercise in an early area:

  1. Pick a visible surface as your target.
  2. Keep the camera still and try a short directional input.
  3. Observe the relationship between that key and the view.
  4. Move the camera, then try the same key again.

This exercise separates camera direction from phone orientation. It is a practice suggestion, not a requirement imposed by the game. Once you understand the relationship, aim the camera before combining rotation with a jump, so you have fewer changing inputs to diagnose after a miss.

Choose height or distance before pressing Space

Space alone is the high-jump input; direction plus Space is the long-jump input. If you want height but are still holding a movement key, you are asking for the other documented jump type.

For practice, compare a jump with no direction held against a directional jump from a similar starting situation. Keep the camera unchanged while making that comparison. You can then examine what changes when you add movement and momentum, rather than assuming that every Space press should produce an identical arc.

The official site describes the movement as torque-based and says momentum matters. A moving approach and a stationary attempt should therefore be considered different situations when reviewing a failed jump. The registered controls overview does not specify a universal launch angle, fixed input duration, or guaranteed jump distance.

What the community movement guide adds

A Steam community movement discussion posted on March 26 describes more advanced techniques. These are community reports from before the full release, not independently verified instructions for the October 16 version.

The author discusses jumping after spring contact, using wall contact during chained jumps, and combining rotation with different launch positions. Another player describes timing the vibration input around landing and making small camera adjustments near a wall. These reports identify possible skills to investigate after the basic inputs feel comfortable.

They do not establish that an airborne jump is freely available at any moment. The discussion connects several examples to contact with a surface, and the official overview only documents the basic high and long jumps. Avoid treating a reported wall-contact sequence as a guaranteed unrestricted double jump.

If you experiment, change one input at a time and compare what happens in your version. Chill Mode can make that learning process less punishing because its collectible checkpoints allow respawning. Hard Mode has no checkpoints, so testing an unfamiliar advanced technique can carry a much larger progress cost.

Controls FAQ

Which keys move Flippy?

WASD rotates Flippy relative to the camera. His movement is built around rotation and vibration jumps rather than ordinary walking.

How do I jump straight up?

Use the documented high-jump input: press Space with no directional key held. If a direction is held with Space, you perform the long-jump input instead.

What does Tab open?

Tab opens Flippy's phone interface. The official site lists minigames, statistics, checkpoints, and skins among its functions.

Does the game support controllers?

Yes. The official FAQ confirms full controller support, including DualShock and DualSense. The registered source does not list the exact gamepad bindings, so check the controls displayed in your game for those buttons.
